Adults can experience chills without a fever because chills are simply the body’s involuntary muscle contractions trying to generate heat when it feels cold or undergoes a sudden physiological change. This frequently happens due to cold environmental exposure, low blood sugar, severe stress or panic, hypothyroidism, or dehydration. Additionally, it can occur during the early stages of an infection or after strenuous exercise when body heat rapidly drops as sweat evaporates.
