TISSUES
All cells are well-organised and coordinated to work in a group in
multicellutar organisms. A group of similar cells along with intercellular
substances performs a specific function, such an organisation is called tissue.
The term ‘Tissue’ was introduced by Bichat and he is known as the father of
animal histology.
A tissue can also be defined as a group of one or more types of cells having a
same origin and specialised for specific functions along with the intercellular
materials.
These tissues are organised to form an organ like stomach, lung, heart and
kidney. Two or more organs performing a common function by their physical
and/or chemical interaction, together form an organ system.
The intercellular materials or fluid forms the
environment of the cell. The cell receives almost all the
materials it require from the intercellular fluid and
transfers its waste materials again in this fluid.
Cells, tissues, organs and organ system split up the
work in a way that exhibits division of labour and
contribute to the survival of the body as a whole.
