Skin allergies occur when your immune system misidentifies a harmless substance as a threat and releases chemicals like histamine, triggering inflammation.
Common causes include:
Contact Allergens: Direct skin exposure to substances like nickel (in jewelry), latex, fragrances, cosmetics, hair dyes, or plants like poison ivy.
Environmental & Food Allergens: Airborne dust mites, pollen, pet dander, or eaten foods (like nuts, shellfish, or dairy) that cause systemic skin reactions like hives or eczema flare-ups.
Medications: Oral or topical drugs, particularly antibiotics (like penicillin) or pain relievers.
Irritants & Chemicals: Harsh soaps, detergents, cleaning products, and synthetic fabrics that break down the skin’s protective barrier.
