This institute has been set up on 27th
June, 1963 in Jabalpur, M.P. This Institute is assumed
to be the ISt Class Level Institute of India in forest
research.
SFRI was granted autonomed in 1994.
Mission : The institute’s mission is to highlight the
adaptive and applied research programmes for the
conservation and development of forest and forestry
sector in Madhya Pradesh.
Goals
a. Conservation of forests and forest resources-soil,
water, florat and faunal biodiversity.
b. Enhancement of productivity ofnatural forests and
plantations.
c. Expansion of free cover.
d. Efficient and sustainable utilization of forest
resources and forest products – timber and NTFPs.
e. Sustainable management of forests involving
people’s participation for income and employment
generation of forest – dependent communities.
Mr. J.M. Best was appointed as the first Silviculturist
of Central Province and Barar State in 1922. This is
assumed to be the beginning of forest research in
the state.
